What is your business called and what does it do?

Thinking Ceramic is a pottery painting and clay handbuilding studio in downtown Halifax. People can drop in, pick a pottery they like, and spend a couple of hours getting creative. We also serve coffee, so it’s really a place where people can slow down, relax, and enjoy some quality time together.

What made you want to do this work?

I’ve always loved hands-on hobbies and making things. At the same time, I realized there aren’t that many places where people can just walk in and do something creative without needing any experience. I wanted to create a space that feels welcoming, where people can unplug for a while and leave with something they made themselves.

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

Life feels busy for everyone these days. We’re always working, looking at screens, or rushing to the next thing. I wanted to create a place where people could take a break, spend time with family or friends, and do something that’s fun without feeling any pressure to be “good” at it.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

Honestly, it’s a little bit of everyone, and that’s one of my favourite things about the studio. We see families with young kids, couples on date nights, students, tourists, birthday parties, coworkers, and even people who come by themselves for a quiet afternoon.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

Guests choose a pottery piece to paint or a clay project to build, and we provide everything they need. Once they’re finished, we “cook” the pieces in our kilns. Guests can pick it up once ready. We also host birthday parties, team events, and private gatherings.

Where in the city can we find your profession?

We’re located inside Spring Garden Place Mall in downtown Halifax, 5640 Spring Garden Rd Unit 202

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

Do I need any experience to enjoy pottery painting or clay handbuilding?”

“Absolutely not. Our studio is designed for complete beginners. We provide guidance, examples, and all the materials you need. The goal isn’t to create a perfect piece—it’s to enjoy the experience.”

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

The best part is seeing people genuinely enjoy themselves. Sometimes families are laughing around the table, sometimes friends are catching up over coffee, and sometimes someone comes in alone just to relax after work. It’s really rewarding to be part of those moments.

The hardest part is that small business owners never really stop working. There are always emails to answer, supplies to order, kilns to load, or something unexpected that comes up. But I wouldn’t trade it.

What is your favourite joke about your own profession?

We always tell people, “Don’t worry—we’ve seen worse!” 😂

Where can we follow you?

PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?

I’d have to say Inkwell Modern Handmade. Every time I stop in, I find something unique. They do an amazing job of supporting independent artists and makers, and I really appreciate businesses that help build such a creative and welcoming community in Halifax.
