Born in Santiago de Cuba, Jorge Peña carries the sounds, stories, and rhythms of his homeland wherever he performs. Growing up surrounded by the rich musical traditions of eastern Cuba, he developed a deep connection to the rhythms that would shape his life as a singer, instrumentalist, and songwriter.
Before making Canada his home, Jorge built an impressive career performing throughout Cuba and internationally, sharing stages with renowned Cuban musicians and bringing the spirit of Cuban music to audiences across Europe. His performances are infused with the warmth, passion, and spontaneity that define the island’s musical culture.
With Montuno Cubano, Jorge continues a lifelong mission: to share Cuban music not simply as a style, but as an experience. The band’s performances invite audiences into a world of vibrant rhythms, heartfelt melodies, and the joy of connection that lies at the heart of Cuban culture.

Although we have been performing together for more than 30 years, we recently adopted the name Montuno Cubano—a name that proudly celebrates their Cuban roots. It also introduces the word “montuno,” that represents the high-energy call-and-response sections and rhythmic patterns that can be improvisational and are the heartbeat of Cuban music.

Live show ritual:
Singing at full power is an athletic experience—it demands breath, stamina, and complete control. An empty stomach helps me give everything I have to the audience, so that’s one ritual I never break.
Favourite local musician:
Coming from Cuba, music has always been about community more than individuality, so I admire many local musicians.
EP or LP?
Definitely LPs. A larger collection of songs allows me to tell more stories, explore different emotions, and give listeners a deeper sense of who I am as an artist.
Early bird or night owl?
Definitely a night owl. Growing up in Cuba, music and performances naturally came alive in the evening, so that’s when I feel most energized and creative.
Road or studio?
For most of my career, I would have chosen the road without hesitation. But working with the incredibly talented producer Sergey Varlamov at Crabbe Road Productions in Prince Edward Island has given me a whole new appreciation for the recording studio. Today, I couldn’t choose between them—they’re simply different expressions of the same passion.

“Montuno Cubano: Cuban Soul, Maritime Spirit” is a special concert that brings together the authentic Cuban rhythms and energy of Montuno Cubano with the rich musical traditions and storytelling of Atlantic Canada. Featuring talented Maritime guest artists alongside Montuno Cubano, the show celebrates the beautiful connections between these two cultures through music.

What is your favourite local restaurant?
My favourite restaurant is actually my own kitchen. One of the things I’ve come to love about living in Canada is the incredible variety of ingredients available in grocery stores.
What is your favourite street in your city and why?
My favourite “street” is the beach that begins at my front lawn. It’s where I find peace and inspiration.
What is your favourite park in your city and why?
My favourite park is Prince Edward Island National Park. It reminds me how fortunate I am to call Canada home.
What is your favourite music venue in your city?
The Mack Theatre in Charlottetown. I’ve learned that the most memorable venues are not always the biggest—they are the ones where people listen, feel, and share the experience of music together.

Bandcamp. I appreciate that its platform helps independent musicians share their work and connect with listeners.
