Hospital Gossip was formed in 2021 out of a longstanding desire to bring something new to Halifax’s vibrant punk scene. Their first release, ‘Apart At Last,’ was a realization of the band’s desire to create something meaningful together, exploring themes of intra- and interpersonal relationships, the relationship with the place one lives, and the experience of observing the tribulations of others from the outside.
In the time since, the band has refined their message and musical direction, branching out into more experimental structures and drawing from a wider array of influences from metal, punk, and funk, to jazz, hip-hop, and progressive rock.
At the end of 2025, Hospital Gossip looked to shirk all of these labels with the release of their first full-length album, ‘Not Tragedy’. Not Tragedy is a collection of thoughts and stories, each of which reflects on a feeling or an experience. Sometimes these feelings are dour, sometimes they are cynical, but they never dwell on their gloom.
With this record, the band challenges themselves and the listener to explore the way we react and feel about things, and hope that exploration leads to brighter outcomes. Every reflection here tries to look past the seriousness to find a glimmer of hope where we sometimes feel there is none. Never wallowing in their misery, each story tries to push beyond the tragedy and find a smirk underneath sadness.

Rapid Fire Local Questions:
What is your favourite local restaurant?
Tusket Falls. We often go down there for food after soundcheck if we are playing on Gottingen. For vegans, try the Brussels sprout tacos!
What is your favourite street in your city and why?
Agricola Street. So many wonderful businesses, including Bramble Cafe, Obsolete Records, Chainyard Cider, and of course, local punk mainstay Gus’ Pub. They also do street markets a few times a year, which are always an incredible experience for local vendors.
What is your favourite park in your city and why?
Hemlock Ravine. It’s never terribly busy, often feels really secluded for being in the city, and it’s great for birding. Plus, the heart-shaped pond is adorable.
What is your favourite music venue in your city?
For all ages, Radstorm will always take the cake. They do amazing work supporting local youth. The Light House Arts Centre is an amazing newer venue of its size. We had the opportunity to play a battle of the bands there, and it was great. The sound is always excellent when you’re in the audience as well.
What is your favourite music store in your city?
Renegade Records in Dartmouth! They do so much for the local scene. They’ve even recently started putting on free, all-ages shows right in the store! Shows start early and make for a cool, intimate experience you can’t get at a bar or other venue.
