Five Minutes With: Pop Artist idialedyournumber

idialedyournumber is the lyrically vulnerable solo project of Halifax-based musician and producer Jessie Everil, blending raw DIY ethos with digital-era experimentation. Emerging in the early 2020s, the project has quickly carved out a cult following through a distinctive mix of emo, screamo, indie rock, and bitpop textures.

Favourite musician growing up:

Definitely a tie between Fiona Apple, Björk, and Ryan Ross. I was really drawn to art pop and theatrical alternative music growing up, and I still am. I highly respect artists that are not afraid to be vulnerable through their music.

Favourite musician now:

Porter Robinson and the Frost Children are geniuses when it comes to sound design. Every texture feels so intentional. I love how they can take ordinary, detailed sounds and turn them into something so immersive and deeply emotional.

Guilty pleasure song:

I’m pretty sure “We Built This City” by Starship gets a lot of hate, but to be honest, it goes ridiculously stupid. I can’t hear it without thinking of the Muppets (which is a good thing).

Live show ritual:

I like to enjoy a lemon ginger tea with honey before a gig, both as a vocal warm-up and as a genuinely soothing ritual. Checking out the other bands on the lineup is a must as well. I find that watching them inspires me to bring even more energy to my own live performances.

Favourite local musician:

Alasdair Song of Earth Moon Transit is an incredible songwriter and musician. He’s genuinely so talented in a lot of different ways. I really recommend checking out his stuff, especially if you’re a fan of The Brave Little Abacus (my favourite band) or early Panic! At The Disco.

EP or LP?

LPs are far more immersive and coherent, and I really prefer them when it comes to sinking into an artist’s music.

Early bird or night owl?

As much as I love the sunrise and walking outside in the morning, I’ve always loved nightlife, and it is especially appealing to me as a musician. I’ve had my fair share of sleep issues as well, so I assume I’m automatically a night owl.

Road or studio?

Being on tour is genuinely the best. As an extrovert, getting to constantly talk to people while doing something I love feels like a dream come true. But I also love being in the studio. Music production is my biggest hobby, and I could spend hours experimenting and creating.

Any shows or albums coming up?

I’m currently working on an EP, slowly but surely. We’ve got a few shows lined up in September, which will be in Ottawa, Toronto, and Montréal.

Rapid Fire Local Questions:

What is your favourite local restaurant?

Most definitely Wasabi Asian Cuisine in Lower Sackville, best valued and tasting all-you-can-eat sushi.

What is your favourite street in your city and why?

I like Argyle St because of the nightlife. I like that the road is closed off for pedestrians, and I truly believe there should be more streets like that in Halifax.

What is your favourite park in your city and why?

I’ve made some good memories at Point Pleasant Park in Halifax. It’s in a convenient area, but it’s not that busy. I like to soak up the nature there.

What is your favourite music venue in your city?

Definitely Radstorm. I’ve been volunteering there for a few years now, and it’s such a wonderful third space for many different mediums of art.

What is your favourite music store in your city?

I’d say the Long & McQuade in Halifax has been very reliable for me over the years. Great for when I forget something for a gig, but I’m already in the city.
