Tragedy Plus Time: Comedian Chris Halef

Chris Halef’s comedy feels like sitting across from someone hilariously overthinking their own life in the most articulate way possible. Blending autobiographical storytelling with sharp joke writing, the Halifax comic pulls material from dating disasters, cultural identity, family dynamics, and even turtlenecks — all delivered with an easy conversational style that makes every story feel personal. Influenced by legends like Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, and Patrice O’Neal, Halef balances thoughtful observations with the kind of punchlines that sneak up on you. His material about growing up Middle Eastern has resonated deeply with audiences across the East Coast, earning him a reputation as both a fearless comic and a genuinely relatable voice. Whether he’s reminiscing about the now-legendary Hell’s Basement in Moncton or preparing to headline Halifax clubs this summer, Chris Halef brings warmth, honesty, and razor-sharp writing to every stage he steps on.

How would you describe your comedy style?

I never really know how to answer this question, but I’d say autobiographical, jokes and storytelling about everything from dating, turtlenecks and my Middle Eastern background.

Who are some of your influences?

Some of my early influences were Chris Rock, early Dave Chapelle, Patrice O’Neal, and my grandmother on my mom’s side, oddly enough. Still the funniest, most foul-mouthed person I’ve ever known.

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

I don’t know if he was my favourite, but early on, Russell Peters was pretty big for me. His Comedy Now special had some bits about his upbringing that I related to a lot, as a Middle Eastern guy.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

Tough, but I’d say Sam Morrill is up there. Best joke writer in the game today imo. Also love Sam Tallent, Joe List and Jessica Kirson.

What is your pre-show ritual?

I pace a lot, I stretch my legs for some reason (even though I’m not a physical comic), and I just mouth my set order, over and over again, until it’s time to go up. Afterwards, I’m “more relaxed and easier to be around,” according to my comedy friends.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

It’s no longer around, but my favourite place was an underground comedy club in Moncton, NB called Hell’s Basement, which was underneath a Subway. The fast food chain, not an actual subway.

It was about 50 seats, set up NYC style, and you could go up there as a comic who was 8 months in and feel like an international headliner. Insanely hot crowds.

Also got to perform at the Rebecca Cohn Theatre in Halifax, which was great cause it was the first place I saw stand-up live. So, a cool full circle moment.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

It’s a longer bit that I won’t write out completely, but I wrote one a few years back about how I don’t like the acronym BIPOC and how 99 percent of us still think it means Bisexual People of Colour. And I dive deeper into why I don’t like it, as a person who comes from a Middle Eastern background.

I’m proud of it because anytime I do it, racialized audience members come up and thank me because they feel the same way. Which is always a nice feel because it kind of makes me go, “Okay, so I’m not crazy for thinking this”.

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

Either in person if I’m on a show with them, or accidentally stumbling upon someone on IG reels.

Tell us a joke about your city.

There’s nothing funny about Halifax. It’s a sacred place.

Do you have anything to promote right now?

I’ll be around doing shows on the East Coast over the next couple months, and then I’m headlining Yuk Yuks Halifax on July 24/25 and Halifax Live Comedy Club on Aug 28/29.

I’m also going to be in Europe from July 30 to Aug 17. No shows, just seeing my grandmother. So if you guys want to check that out, that’d be great.
