Tragedy Plus Time: Comedian Harry Baker III

Harry Baker III turns bad decisions, awkward encounters, and ruthless self-awareness into comedy that feels both painfully honest and impossible not to laugh at. The Halifax comic leans into a style that’s unfiltered, self-deprecating, and grounded in real-life stories that most people would probably keep to themselves. Influenced by comics like George Carlin, Katt Williams, and newer voices like Shane Gillis and Jordan Jensen, Baker brings an energetic, loose confidence to the stage — even if his pre-show ritual mostly consists of aggressively lying to himself for motivation. Whether he’s workshopping layered stories about disastrous dates or hosting local favourites like Sunday Sesh in Halifax, Harry’s comedy thrives on authenticity, awkwardness, and the strange comfort of admitting your flaws out loud before anyone else can.

Harry Baker III

How would you describe your comedy style?

A comic who turns awkward real-life experiences, bad decisions, and brutal self-awareness into painfully honest comedy. Self-deprecating, unfiltered, and somehow still employable.

Who are some of your influences?

My largest influence might be Adam Sandler, because he did it his way. Is he the funniest person ever? Some may argue no. But to do what he wants to do, and try to make it funny for everyone. That’s the real prize.

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

George Carlin or Katt Williams

Who is your favourite comedian now?

Ricky Velez, Shane Gillis, and Jordan Jensen.

What is your pre-show ritual?

I was a bit of a jock growing up, and so I fall back to my athletic roots for my pre-show ritual. Which just includes me saying absurd things to hype myself up… Like “You’re the effin man” or “You’re gonna crush it”. Both ridiculous and far from the truth…

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

My favourite place to perform is in the Basement of the Shoe on Argyle Street. Either at a Yuk’s Yuk’s pro/am or the Sunday Sesh!

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

My favourite bit is a true story about going on a date with a woman with one hand. I am proud of it most because it began with a small, silly story and has become a multi-layered bit with multiple tags that I can choose from. I also wrote this joke just a couple months after I started comedy, so I imagine in a few years I will hate it, but for now she is the one.

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

YouTube is the goat of visual content, podcasts, stand-up, and skits. All the juicy goodness can be found there. But I love comedy so much that you can often find me at a show in Halifax almost any night of the week to get my fix of new local comedy.

Tell us a joke about your city.

Halifax is nothing to Joke about, it’s a very serious place and needs to be taken very seriously. Except Gottingen Street, don’t take anyone who lives on Gottingen Street seriously.

Do you have anything to promote right now?

The Sunday Sesh – Sundays at 8:30 PM at The Basement

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?
