Tragedy Plus Time: Comedian Robin Lindsay

Robin Lindsay has the kind of comedy style that sneaks up on you — absurd enough to feel surreal, but delivered with such confidence that audiences willingly follow him straight into the chaos. Influenced by sharp-minded weirdos like Larry David, Gary Larson, and the world-building imagination of Roald Dahl, the Halifax comic specializes in stories that balance truth, stupidity, and razor-sharp timing in equal measure. Whether he’s dissecting the accidental femininity of his own name or roasting Halifax for its lack of competitive eating challenges, Lindsay’s material feels both deeply specific and delightfully unpredictable. A loyal pre-show 7Up drinker and longtime admirer of Conan O’Brien, Robin brings an offbeat charm to the stage that makes even the most ridiculous premises feel strangely believable.

How would you describe your comedy style?

I write absurd stories with a little truth in them. I try not to give the audience time to realize that what I am saying is completely stupid, and just buy it.

Who are some of your influences?

Larry David, Roald Dahl, Lou Reed, and Gary Larson are all formative. Farside probably the most.

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

I wasn’t that conscious of stand up growing up, but I loved Monty Python as a kid, and later SNL, The Simpsons, and Conan O’Brien. Conan still rules.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

It’s hard for me to narrow this down, but I’ll mention John Mulaney, Michelle Wolf, and Anthony Jeselnik. I like joke writers, and those three are especially clever and prolific. I empathize with Larry David.

What is your pre-show ritual?

I rehearse my set alone in the car on the way to the show. I drink a 7Up. That’s it. But I’ve never not had a 7Up.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

Of all the stages in Halifax, the Bearly’s stage is the prettiest.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

The bit I am probably most known for is about my especially effeminate (for a man) name. A female identity precedes me wherever I go. If you Google me, the AI result knows I’m a comic but refers to me as a woman.

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

I don’t have the scoop here. I am always late to the game. I hear about a new comic when they release their first Netflix special.

Tell us a joke about your city.

Halifax Schmalifax. That BeardMeatsFood competitive eater guy was in Halifax, and there weren’t any challenges here for him. That guy did a donair competition in Calgary, of all places. And that’s a joke! Come on, Halifax.
