Some comedians ease you into the room. Robbie Vino is not one of them. From the moment he hits the mic, he’s already in the middle of a story — loud, vivid, and completely committed. We caught up with the Halifax-based comic to talk influences, rituals, and why you don’t need a submarine to find dead people in his city.
How would you describe your comedy style?
High-energy stories and straight-up silliness. I’m not standing still, and I’m not being subtle — I want the room loud, and I want people leaning in.
Who are some of your influences?
The guys who shaped how I see comedy — fearless storytellers and performers who never played it safe.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
Dean Cook, Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, Bernie Mac, Tom Green, Norm MacDonald, and Jim Carrey. A wild mix, but honestly, that probably explains a lot about my style.
Who is your favourite comedian now?
Shane Gillis, Ari Shaffir, Dave Chappelle, Danny Martinello, and Nick Burden. Guys who are doing honest, fearless work right now.
What is your pre-show ritual?
A joint to take the edge off, a shot of tequila to fire everything back up. Works every time.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
The Laugh Lounge in Ottawa. It’s right downtown and has that underground New York comedy club vibe — low ceilings, real crowd, everybody there for the right reasons. That room just hits different.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
The one about growing up with my sisters and how that shaped who I am today. It’s personal, it’s chaotic, and it’s true — and I think people feel that. When a bit comes from a real place, the laughs land harder.
What is your favourite medium for finding new comics?
Open mics. Nothing beats watching someone find their voice in real time. That’s where the real stuff happens.
Tell us a joke about your city.
You don’t need a billion dollars and a submarine to see dead people from the Titanic — they’re all buried here by the bridge.
