North Brewing brews thoughtful and creative craft beers while also providing inclusive gathering spaces for the community at three Halifax locations. Actually, they brew more than just beer. North Brewing also serves and sells seltzers, ciders, canned cocktails — like their Sparkling Hard Lemonade — and even a house-blended vodka called Kaleidoscope. We spoke with the owners of North Brewing to learn more.

What is your business called and what does it do?
North Brewing. North Brewing is a local microbrewery and full-service taproom with locations in Cole Harbour, Downtown Dartmouth and Timberlea.
What made you want to do this work?
We were attracted to craft brewing because it was a push back against mass market homogenization. A handful of multinational conglomerates owned 95% of the beer market in Canada, and the craft industry was a push to take back some of that market share with small local producers that we able to produce better and more interesting beer while circulating dollars in our communities instead of profits being funneled off to shareholders around the world.
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
We wanted to be a safe and friendly neighbourhood brewery that is part of the fabric of the communities we are lucky enough to operate in.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
We strive to be a very inclusive space that is welcoming to everyone. We have a space that caters to hangouts with friends or family. We have a kids’ menu and are welcoming to families with or without little ones in tow.

How does your business make money? How does it work?
We make our beer and sell it directly as well as wholesale. We also have 2 full-service taprooms with kitchens.
Where in the city can we find your profession?
Cole Harbour, Downtown Dartmouth and Timberlea
What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.
Do you like fun and world-class beverages? If you do, then check out North Brewing 🙂
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
The best part of what we do is making connections in the communities we serve and seeing folks we have supported with the North Brewing Scholarship thrive in their schooling and beyond.
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
When you are delivering a keg, and someone on the street says, “You can load that right in my trunk”.
Where can we follow you?
PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?
We are big fans of the Narrows. They built an amazingly beautiful space and represent Nova Scotian food extremely well.
