Travis Hatcher is a multi-instrumentalist currently based in Westphal, Nova Scotia. Hailing originally from Labrador, Travis Hatcher is a folk/rock musician with roots in Newfoundland and an eclectic musical taste, giving him a unique approach to his songwriting.
Travis’ music has been positively received from both fans and reviewers alike. Travis’ passionate vocal delivery is a staple in his performance, and his lyrics show an innate ability for storytelling – whether fiction or non. Travis’ songs are designed to ensnare the imagination and stir your emotions.
After graduating from university, Travis moved away from Halifax and began performing in Moncton, New Brunswick and Amherst, Nova Scotia, in a variety of different projects, travelling in both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia playing shows.
During this time, Travis started to learn about recording and started to experiment with his songs at home as a new avenue to explore writing and creating. These recording led to Travis forming “The Big Wide Hurt,” bringing his bedroom recordings to new life with the band and performing them at venues and festivals.
Unforeseen circumstances led Travis to return to Halifax in 2013, where he reconnected with the local scene and began performing in local venues as a solo performer and in bands.
Travis released “Pieces” in August 2018, “Man Down” and “Campfire Favourites” followed in April 2020. In recent years, Travi has been releasing EPs recorded in the month of February for the RPM challenge, putting out “Fever Dream” (2024), “Archives Vol. 1” (2025), and “Almost …” (2026). In 2026, Travis also released “Thursday Night Writes”, an album of songs co-written with Jon Borup. Travis is currently working on a new album without the time constraints of the RPM challenge and is hoping to have it finished by the fall of 2026.
Travis not only writes and performs his own material, he travels the Maritimes and plays favourites from yesterday and today. Travis’ goal is to offer a show that has something for everyone. He plays music in a variety of genres: country, classic rock, modern rock, traditional Irish, maritime, and blues is available for hire for any different number of events.

EP or LP?
I prefer an LP. EPs are great, but there’s nothing like being able to sit down and really take some time with the music, sometimes EPs are enough, but you can’t make them longer where an LP can be taken in pieces or as a whole.
Early bird or night owl?
Night owl. The night is just a calmer time – many people are in for the evening, there’s less traffic passing by, less emails and phone notifications popping up, the night is just less “noisy” and find I work better under the moon.
Road or studio?
Studio all the way. The road is fun, and I always like to travel for a gig, but as I’ve gotten older, I like to tinker more in the studio than being on the highway. Writing and recording an idea, then wrestling with where the song is going to go, is an enjoyable experience. Plus, at the end of it, I can crawl into my own bed, and my dogs are always happy that I’m home.
Any shows or albums coming up?
I play a regular Sunday night gig at The Split Crow in Halifax, and this summer I have some private and corporate events to perform, including Chester Race Week at the local Yacht Club, which is going to be a good time. I have a number of other shows on the schedule as well, which can be found on my website.
I am in the pre-production phase of a new full-length album I’m hoping to have out before the end of the year, but I’m really taking my time with this one, so I haven’t firmed up a specific timeline for it just yet.

What is your favourite local restaurant?
The Old Triangle
What is your favourite street in your city and why?
I’ll say Young Avenue. It’s in a part of Halifax where there’s lots of trees left near the houses, and the houses themselves are beautiful to look at, and it’s not as busy as many of the main arteries.
What is your favourite park in your city and why?
The York Redoubt. There’s a lot of old military fortifications on the site and some lovely hiking to be done. My son also loves the old military stuff, so it’s a great outing for him and I to explore. Honourable mention to Point Pleasant Park for the same reasons!
What is your favourite music venue in your city?
Gus’ Pub, it reminds me of an all-ages venue I used to play with my first band when I was 15, and they’re really supportive of hosing original music.
What is your favourite music store in your city?
Taz Records is always a place I never leave empty-handed.
